John Hawkes plays a writer crippled by polio who hires a surrogate, played by Helen Hunt, to take his virginity. Kathie Lee said when she first heard the premise she thought it would be tough to watch and almost didn’t want to watch. She said it is painful, but in a human way. John said it does sound like a downer, but it is a really entertaining movie. Hoda said it has tons of humor and is a beautiful movie.

Helen said it was a beautiful script and it premiered at Sundance and they were amazed. John said that when Helen was getting undressed and having to lie there and not help her, that was the challenge of the movie.

Hoda said John plays the character amazingly well, but how did he learn to play a role like that. He said the character is a polio survivor, so he is not crippled, but he just can’t move. He has sensation, but he can’t move.

The Sessions: Spiritual Journey

John said the character in real life wanted his journey blessed and he is Roman Catholic and William H. Macy plays his friend who is also a priest and gives him a lot of good advice. Kathie Lee said it is a spiritual journey for him.
