But his first love is the stage, and he has been collaborating with Cyndi Lauper on the new Broadway musical Kinky Boots, based on a movie that was inspired by a true story. The story is about a shoemaker and his business partner, a drag queen.

Cyndi Lauper wrote the music, and Fierstein wrote the book for the Broadway production.
