The Revolution: Thyroids
Today’s show will feature the reveal of Revolution Hero Jenny Cahalan, who has lost the most weight of anyone so far on The Revolution. She will wear the outfit she picked out five months ago with Tim Gunn.
Jenny is a Thyroid Cancer survivor, and Dr. Jennifer Ashton said that this condition isn’t very well understood among the public. “Up to 60% of those with Thyroid Disease don’t even know that they have a Thyroid problem,” she said.
The Revolution: Underactive Vs Overactive Thyroid
The Thyroid is an Endocrine Hormone gland, and Dr. Jennifer explained all the big ways this little gland can affect your health. Three women who have had Thyroid issues joined Dr. Jennifer to discuss Thyroid 101.
Dr. Jennifer started by explaining that the Thyroid Gland is shaped like a butterfly and it’s wrapped around your Windpipe. It is about the size of a quarter, but it affects almost every body system, including your emotions.
The Revolution Hypothyroid: Underactive Thyroid
Hypothyroid is an Underactive Thyroid gland. A young woman named Jenna explained that her first symptom was hair loss. She said she also had Fatigue, Depression, and Weight Gain.
Dr. Jennifer said Depression is often misdiagnosed and treated with antidepressants, leaving an underlying Thyroid Problem untreated. Jenna said she is feeling a lot better now that she is being treated for her Thyroid condition.
The Revolution Hyperthyroid: Overactive Thyroid
Hyperthyroid is the opposite condition, where your Thyroid is Overactive. A woman named Jen was diagnosed with Hyperthyroid six years ago, and it does run in her family. Symptoms include Weight Loss, especially when you aren’t trying to lose weight. You also need to watch out for Weak Muscles or Racing Heartbeats.
Dr. Jennifer said that Hyperthyroid can sometimes be mistaken for Stress. She added that listening to your body can be the best way to notice changes in its function. Jen finally had a Bulging Eye that caused her to get to the bottom of her condition.
Oprah Winfrey’s Thyroid
Media mogul and talk show host Oprah Winfrey has suffered from both Hypothyroid and Hyperthyroid over the years. Dr. Jennifer said this shows that you should pay close attention to your Thyroid in managing your health.
The Revolution: Thyroid Cancer
Mindy suffered from Thyroid Cancer, and Dr. Jennifer said this is a fast growing cancer that affects young women between ages 20 and 55. It can also affect men.
Mindy said she had no symptoms, and the cancer was discovered when she changed doctors and read her medical records. She learned that a nodule on her Thyroid was discovered several years before.
Thyroid Cancer & Endocrinologist
The good news is that she worked with an Endocrinologist and was able to get early treatment, so she beat the cancer. Dr. Jennifer said about 1 in 20 Thyroid Nodules are cancerous.
Dr. Jennifer said it’s important to ask questions and get copies of all your medical records so you know what is going on with your health. This is your legal right, and in Mindy’s case, she was able to diagnose her own cancer.
Thyroid Cancer Symptoms
Dr. Jennifer said symptoms of Thyroid Cancer include a bump in the neck, trouble swallowing, or other throat problems. But catching this or other cancers early gives you great odds in beating the diagnosis.
