The Doctors TV Show debated the Chocolate Milk Ban being proposed for schools in Florida.  Florida plans to ban all sugary drinks from schools, including chocolate milk.  The Chocolate Milk Ban is hoping to target the increase in childhood obesity, hypertension, high cholesterol and other medical problems children face from an unhealthy diet.  Each of the doctors on The Drs TV Show seemed to have a different opinion on this topic, so it made for an interesting discussion. The Doctors Chocolate Milk Ban

The Doctors said that a study found that 70% of milk consumption at school is a flavored form of milk.  Regular milk is good for you because it has complex carbs and protein.  However, a study found that if you get rid of chocolate milk, then there is a 35% decrease in the amount of milk children will consume at school.

Dr Travis Stork said that he would love for someone to do a study on kids who drink flavored milk at lunch and what their weights are like compared to kids at schools where flavored milk is banned.  Perhaps the state of Florida will do a study like this.  Dr Travis says that he thinks kids will find a way to replace chocolate milk with something even less healthy or they will just bring sugary drinks from home.  Most kids do not care if regular milk is healthier than chocolate milk, and it is very difficult to train children to love protein and vitamins over taste.  Kids do often learn by experience, though.  For example, if they have too much cake and bad food at a birthday party, and then they feel badly afterward, they learn that this is why they should not eat sugary and unhealthy foods all the time.

The Doctors made an interesting point, which is that physical activity is even more important for healthy bones than calcium.  So if it is a choice between exercise followed by chocolate milk or no exercise and regular milk, the first option is the healthiest.
