The Doctors: Kevin Ware Basketball Injury
The Doctors’ Friday News Feed was all-new with the latest on basketball player Kevin Ware, reality star Shain Gandee and much more in health news. First up was the recent headline-making story of University of Louisville sophomore Kevin Ware. The young basketball star recently became a household name after suffering a devastating injury on the court.
As Dr. Travis Stork pointed out, this was the worst injury many people – including sports professionals – had ever seen. “I looked down at my leg and my bone was six inches out of my leg,” Kevin said during a press conference. To discuss Kevin’s injury, The Doctors welcomed football Hall of Famer Joe Theismann and Dr. Christopher Lee.
The Doctors: Kevin Ware Compound Open Fracture
After witnessing Kevin’s injury, Joe Theismann had a flashback to a similar injury he sustained during his football career. He immediately reached out to Kevin and has been speaking with the young athlete about the physical and emotional consequences of injuries ever since. Joe shared a text message that Kevin recently sent him. “Sometimes things don’t turn out the way you wanted, but an opportunity presents itself after that,” it read. He believes that Kevin will be the “comeback college player” of next season.
Dr. Christopher Lee revealed how it’s possible for a bone to break through the skin. The injury occurred when Kevin landed on one leg. Instead of bending his knees, he tried to stop himself. “His leg basically buckled, so he had no shock absorption,” Dr. Lee explained. “Unfortunately the bone just failed under the pressure.”
The treatment and recovery for a compound open fracture includes a rod that’s inserted into the bone in order to keep it in place. With this rod, rehab can begin almost immediately. Kevin was up on crutches just a couple days after his surgery.
The Doctors: Kevin Ware’s Sister Donna Smith
The Doctors were able to speak with Donna Smith on the phone, who is Kevin Ware’s sister. She revealed that her brother is “doing great.” In fact, he’s doing so well even she can barely believe it. The Doctors sent their best wishes to Kevin for a speedy recovery.
