The Drs: Jennifer Grey Chronic Neck Pain
Actress Jennifer Grey first showed off her skills in Dirty Dancing and then she wowed us all again on Dancing with the Stars when she became the season 10 champion. What many people don’t know is that Jennifer has been struggling with debilitating neck pain. Jennifer shared that the week before Dirty Dancing opened, she was in a head-on collision, and she was grateful to be alive, but her neck was a problem from then on.
She found herself avoiding things and was worried she would have trouble on set due to migraines. She eventually avoided flying and was worried she would never feel okay again. She was approaching 50 years old when they asked her to do Dancing with the Stars. When she saw a doctor, she was told her neck was one of the worst he had ever seen. She underwent four surgeries before asking if she could do the show. The night before the finale, she noticed that something didn’t feel quite right, and it turns out that she had ruptured a disc.
The Drs: Jennifer Grey Neck Injury
She ended up finishing the show and winning, but she started feeling bad again, and was having spikes of pain. One time she was just making her daughter’s lunch and somehow ended up crumpled on the floor in pain, crying. She finally saw a doctor again, who recommended yet another surgery, to which she surrendered.
Her doctor’s name is Dr Robert Bray, and he explained that Jennifer has severe collapse of several discs in her neck, so they had to go in and replace them. He explained that he had to do multiple levels of neck replacement, which is difficult considering it’s right next to a fusion. The space in Jennifer’s neck is stretched back open to create height in the disc.
The Drs: Ruptured Disc Neck Surgery
To find out how the surgery went, The Doctors welcomed Jennifer to the show. Jennifer said she could saw she’s doing pretty fantastic. She described her neck injury as sort of like a jelly donut, explaining that when she ruptured a disk, it was like the jelly on the inside of the donut squeezing out. She described the pain as worse than childbirth.
The Doctors talked to Dr Bray after Jennifer said she felt better the very same day of her surgery. Dr Bray explained that before Jennifer went on Dancing with the Stars, they had to go in from the front and fuse something that was highly unstable and dangerous, and then go in through the back to take out some bone spurs, which got her good enough to do Dancing, but never really had her free of pain.
