The Drs: Dad Calls Cops To Witness Spanking

The Doctors wanted to discuss the controversial topic of spanking, and whether the law should become part of the equation before the discipline even comes into play. A man in Florida recently caught his 12-year-old daughter fighting with her sister and planned to discipline her over the knee with a paddle. But the young girl informed him that it was against the law to hit your children. The father then called the police and, after discussing the laws with the officer, invited a deputy to his home to witness the punishment, which he claimed was well within his rights.

Dr Drew Ordon shared that the American Pediatric Association is against spanking, saying it’s a negative way to deal with a poor behavior and causes kids to grow up wanting to do the same thing to their kids. Dr Travis Stork shared that up to 90% of parents in the South think that spanking is appropriate and may or may not spank their kids, and that number is up to 80% across the country.

Dr Stork said he believes it’s a terrible use of law enforcement, but in some ways, by having it supervised, at least there’s some guarantee that if it were even able to be considered inappropriate, the officer was right there. Dr Rachael Ross said we have to keep in mind that spanking is a cultural thing and a lot of people say, “well, I got spanked and I turned out okay.” She said studies do show, however, that spanking increases the risk of the child having mental health issues, anxiety, and depression.

Dr Ross said she’s struggled with anxiety her whole life and can’t say whether it is related to her having been spanked. She said as a culture we need to step back and say, “Did you really turn out bad because you were spanked?” Dr Ross said he could have recorded the act just in case, and let the police deal with criminals instead.

The Drs: Spanking Debate

Dr Jennifer Berman argued, “It’s not okay to cause physical pain, physical harm, to a child, ever.” Dr Stork said we live in a world where we too often see the effects of physical harm. He said he thought it was a terrible use of the police officer’s time, but at the same time there was a small part of him that realized at least the dad is aware enough. Dr Berman said he just shouldn’t have done it.

The Doctors shared that spanking your children has been proven to have ill effects in your children over the long term, and this was certainly an inappropriate use of law enforcement.
