The Drs: Healthy Restaurant Dining
If you made a New Year’s resolution to lose weight, or if you’re simply continuing on your weight loss journey, one common struggle is sticking to your healthy eating habits while dining out. The Doctors had nutritionist Cynthia Sass share her tips for eating at a restaurant without wrecking your diet.
Her first tip was to know exactly what you’re going to order before you even walk through the door. Most restaurants have their menus online, so you can go over your options ahead of time. I do this just about every time that I go out to eat. Another great thing I’ve noticed is that also on their website is a nutritional information sheet that will show you exactly what you would be eating in terms of calories, fats, sodium, and any other nutritional information that is valuable to you.

Secondly, she suggested making sure your meal includes at least two of the foods from Dr Phil’s The 20/20 Diet. Green tea is a great option and is widely available. You can also bring one of the foods with you the restaurant, such as raisins and almonds which are easily portable. Make sure your meal contains produce, protein, a super starch, and fit fats.
Third, don’t be afraid to talk to your server and let them know you want to keep it simple, and would like it if your food could be prepared with a little olive oil instead of butter. A lot of restaurants like The Cheesecake Factory, Chili’s, and Chipotle, and even Starbucks have foods that meet these guidelines. You could even ask your server to box up half your meal in advance, and then serve you the other half. Your server can be surprisingly accommodating, but remember, “they work for tips!”
