The Doctors: Anti-Aging Leeches? + Garcinia Cambogia Scam

The Doctors: Leeches To Look Young?

The Doctors kicked off their October 12 show with a clip from Real Housewives Orange County. One of the women was explaining that Demi Moore looks as young as she does because she uses leeches on her stomach to suck out the blood, and then has them squeezed out onto her face to help her look “young and fabulous.” But because leeches have an anti-coagulant, putting them on your stomach causes you to bleed for up to 24 hours after they’re placed there.

The Doctors were joined by dermatologist Dr Sandra Lee and the Real Housewife star from the clip, Heather Dubrow. Heather explained that she’s not had plastic surgery done, so she’s all about non-surgical anti-aging solutions. Dr Lee brought some leeches in, and Heather said it felt like electrodes on her body. Dr Andrew Ordon explained that leeches can actually be used on wounds that need to be cleaned out. Dr Lee then placed a leech on Dr Ordon’s hand.

The Doctors: Leech Blood Face Mask

Heather explained that leeches suck your blood and there’s supposedly an effect that brightens and tightens your skin. Dr Travis Stork said to get a youthful glow using them seems like a “unrealistic notion.” Heather showed a picture of herself after the leeches from her stomach were “milked.” She’s basically using a face mask made up of her own blood and the leeches’ saliva. She said her skin was brighter on her face but the leech bite marks on her stomach took about six months away and she was bleeding profusely from her stomach for a while.

The Doctors: Ex-Husband Yard Sale

The Doctors then moved on to talk about ex-husband yard sales, explaining that in one case, a woman divorced her cheating husband  and then put all of his things on CraigsList. Dr Rachael said this is a better alternative to tossing everything out on the lawn because the woman’s actually making money off it.

The Doctors: Garcinia Cambogia Scam

The Doctors also wanted to talk about the alleged “miracle” weight loss supplement Garcinia Cambogia. They reported that despite claims that with no exercise, diet, or effort whatsoever, there’s no scientific proof the supplements work. Now, a new study reports that 70% of the top-rated Garcinia Cambogia supplements, don’t even contain the active ingredients they claim to contain. Dr Rachael even admitted to buying bottles of it herself after hearing that it was what Oprah used to lose weight, but acknowledged that it didn’t work.

The Doctors: Allergic Reaction From Henna Tattoos

Speaking of things that may not be all that great for you, The Doctors discussed henna tattoos that many people get, knowing they aren’t permanent. Turns out, you could be left with a permanent reminder of the “temporary” tattoo. Dr Lee explained that allergic contact dermatitis occurs as a reaction to PPD, an ingredient commonly found in hair dyes, that exists in black henna ink. PPD is added to the regular ink to make it darker, and many people are having negative reactions. You can be left with scarring and infections, but the good news is that it’s only temporary. Always test the product first to check for a reaction.
