The Doctors: Zika Virus Outbreak Update
The Doctors kicked off their Friday News Feed by discussing the Zika outbreak. Concerns are growing about the virus and it was just recently found that Zika has been associated to vision issues in babies from retina scarring, in addition to underdeveloped brains. If you have scarring of the retina, it can cause serious vision issues and even blindness. Congress is currently debating how much funding to put toward fighting the virus, but right now, there are no confirmed cases of a mosquito transmitting the virus to someone while in the United States.
Approximately 51% of pregnancies in America are unplanned, which means a virus that causes birth defects can be of great concern. Vaccines can take years to develop, which is why other options need to be explored.
Only one in five people who get the Vika virus will experience symptoms, and they’re usually mild, flu-like symptoms. There’s also a possible link between the Zika virus and a syndrome that causes progressive muscle weakening. Dr Travis Stork recommended that if you’re planning a trip abroad, go to the CDC website and look at what infectious diseases you need to be aware of for that area specifically.
The Doctors: Ted Cruz Losing Votes Because Of Facial Expressions?
The Doctors then moved on to talk about the race to the White House. On the Democratic side, it’s a tight race between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders, while on the right, current leaders appear to be Ted Cruz and Donald Trump. Could a candidate’s face be affecting their chances at winning votes? The Doctors explained that a scientist has explained, scientifically, why some voters may find Ted Cruz’s face “off-putting.” In “Psychology Today” it was pointed out that his facial expressions don’t always match what he’s saying. For example, sometimes he’ll smile but the smile won’t reach his eyes. Dr Stork joked “that’s what I look like when I’m constipated.”
Dr Andrew Ordon suggested that if people tell you, you look sad or angry all the time, even when you’re not, there’s always Botox to turn that frown upside down!
The Doctors: A School Just For The Wealthy?
Next, The Doctors shared that Jonathan Cheban, Kim Kardashian‘s best friend, just announced that he plans to open a school in New York with a curriculum that includes a pop culture program for wealthy kids. The program will focus on things like aviation, social media, quality of diamonds, and types of caviar. Jonathan stated “This is the social stuff you need to know to sruvive in a city like this with a lot of money.”
The Doctors agreed that it was a bit disturbing and unnecessary. Dr Stork said he believes every child should learn critical thinking and develop an open mind, and to him, that school does just the opposite. The school would do nothing but create snobs, according to Dr Ordon. What are your thoughts on Jonathan’s school idea?
The Doctors: Remembering Christy O’Donnell
On a different note, The Doctors looked back at the time they were blessed to spend with Christy O’Donnell, who was fighting for the End of Life Options Act, to give terminally-ill people in California the option to die peacefully and quickly, just as they want. Christy passed away with her daughter at her side, and was instrumental in getting the law she dedicated the end of her life to, passed. She truly left a legacy to her daughter Bailey. All thoughts and prayers are with the family of Christy O’Donnell.
