The Drs: Dick Van Dyke Longevity
Dick Van Dyke has been a familiar presence in TV and movies for decades, from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins to The Dick Van Dyke Show and Diagnosis Murder. He joined The Doctors to talk about his fabulous career and how he manages to keep going strong, even at age 86. He showed off Bounding on trampolines with The Doctors and shared his longevity secrets.
The Doctors team said they are big fans of Dick Van Dyke’s body of work. After a little butt-kissing, Dr Travis Stork got right to it: how does Dick stay in such great shape through the decades?
He gave credit to his good genes to begin with. But his next tip should come as no surprise to anyone who’s been around TV doctors long enough. “Exercise. Keep moving,” he said. “And try to eat right.”
Dick Van Dyke Married 40-Year-Old Wife
Dick Van Dyke also said he likes having young friends around to keep him youthful. In fact, he was recently married to a woman half his age, who was in the audience. “It’s enough to make Hugh Hefner blush,” he admitted.
He also keeps busy with his singing work, in a quartet with three 40-year-olds. They perform for charities, and even got to take the act to Washington and perform for President Barack Obama. Dr Travis cajoled Dick into showing off a few of his moves.
The Doctors: Dick Van Dyke Breakfast Cereal Recipe
Dick Van Dyke said he makes the most out of his breakfast with a combination of some healthy favorite choices. Here is what Dick said he layers in his breakfast bowl each morning, starting with the bottom layer.
- Raisin Bran
- Extra Raisins
- Wheat Bran
“They’re so good for your brain,” Dr Jim Sears said of Blueberries. “It helps your brain fight aging. It helps your immune system, heart health, fight those free radicals.” Since it also improves circulation in intimate areas, he compared it to “nature’s little blue pill,” which embarrassed Dick’s young wife.
The Drs: Dick Van Dyke Arthritis
Dick Van Dyke said he has had Arthritis for the last 50 years, and even tore a muscle in 1967 on the set of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Back then, his doctor predicted he’d have to rely on a walker within a few years. That was one of the motivators that got him exercising.
Dick wanted to ask The Doctors about why some days he feels pain-free, but other days his Arthritis can act up. Dr Travis said there are different types of Arthritis to know about.
Types of Arthritis
- Osteoarthritis: Cartilage wear & tear
- Rheumatoid Arthritis: Autoimmune & progressive
Anti-Inflammatory Arthritis Foods
Dr Travis recommended a few Anti-Inflammatory foods that can help diminish some Arthritis symptoms.
- Salmon (for Omega 3)
- Brazil Nuts (for Selenium)
- Ginger & Turmeric
Bad Arthritis Foods
Sometimes you’ll feel worse the day after eating some bad foods, Dr Andrew Ordon explained. His list of Bad Arthritis Foods included:
- Refined Sugars (white rice or pasta)
- Saturated/Fried Foods
The Drs: Arthritis & Weight
Dr Ordon concluded by noting that even slight weight changes can make a difference in how you feel and the way symptoms manifest themselves. “I weigh the same as I did 50 years ago. It’s just the configuration is a little different,” Dick Van Dyke said.
Dr Travis said that staying active is key to managing Arthritis. “Being active actually can diminish the progressive nature of Arthritis,” he said.
Dick Van Dyke Bounding Review: Mini-Trampoline Exercise
Dick has recently gotten involved in a new exercise called Bounding. “You’re getting on a little trampoline, and for about 15-20 minutes, you go up and down,” he said. I’m not clear on the specific health benefits of this exercise, and apparently neither is Dick.
But that didn’t stop The Doctors and Dick Van Dyke from hitting the mini trampolines to give Bounding a try. Dr Travis suggested that this might help with digestion and balance. Dick liked that it’s a low impact, gentle exercise. As for his young wife, Dick said she prefers Yoga.
