The Doctors: Teens Skipping Breakfast
What did you have for breakfast this morning? For at least one in five people reading this, the answer is probably “nothing.” That’s because breakfast is the most skipped meal of the day. But The Doctors had plenty of suggestions to fix this, including the Kid Friendly Smoothie Recipe.
Breakfast is always called the most important meal of the day, but 60 million Americans don’t eat or drink anything before 11 a.m. Among those that do get breakfast, according to Dr Travis Stork, many aren’t choosing nutrient rich breakfast options.
Dr Jim Sears said this is becoming a growing problem, especially among teens age 13-17. That’s an issue because teens are growing and they need nutrients from a healthy breakfast, such as:
- Vitamin D
- Vitamin A
“If you eat breakfast, it’s so important for a growing child and teen,” pediatrician Dr Jim Sears said. Here are the biggest benefits for kids and teens from a healthy breakfast:
- Better concentration
- Improved problem solving
- Starting the day off right
The Drs: Easy Family Breakfast Options
The Doctors shared some quick and easy breakfast recommendations, including low fat milk, whole grain cereal, and healthy fruit. “Even a cup of milk has just as much protein as an egg,” Dr Travis Stork said.
In fact, cereal with milk actually has good stuff your body needs, such as Calcium, Potassium, Fiber, and Vitamin D.
Adults need to make time for breakfast, because in addition to its nutritional value, it also helps grownups maintain a healthy weight. Dr Travis Stork shared study results that found people skipping breakfast overcorrect for that later in the day and tend to put on more weight than those who do eat breakfast. (Did you hear about the Chocolate Cake Breakfast Diet?)
“If you skip breakfast, your body does some interesting things. It goes into hibernation mode,” he said, talking about how insulin imbalance and fat storage signals could be leading to unwanted weight gain and obesity.
Breakfast gets the body’s metabolism going through the day, keeping your internal systems on track for the rest of the day. Dr Jim Sears said breakfast is also a great time to get together with the family and see how everyone is doing. He suggested a simple smoothie that kids love.

- Fresh Fruit
Combine ingredients in a blender and serve immediately. This option avoids the added sugars of some cereals.
The Drs: Homemade Latte Milk Health Benefits
Coffee isn’t enough to get you going in the morning, but Dr Jim Sears suggested adding warm milk to your coffee for a quick homemade latte. Whole grain pancakes were another option that Dr Travis mentioned.
Lip Balm Warning & Petroleum Jelly Review
Plastic surgeon Dr Andrew Ordon talked about the dangers of dry lips. But he said it’s too easy to overdo it on lip balm. This can create an unnatural barrier to natural lip moisture. Basal cells are supposed to continue to grow and keep lips moist.
But constantly applying lip balm prevents your lips from naturally doing their thing. He suggested using petroleum jelly once or twice per day. Flavored or scented lip balms will actually dry your lips out even more. That’s quite a racket.
