The Doctors: Kari Wuhrer Body Image Interview
The Doctors featured an interview with actress Kari Wuhrer on TMI Tuesday. As someone who has worked in Hollywood for most of her life, Kari gave valuable advice on plastic surgery, body image and the pressure to be perfect. Here’s more on her story.
At the age of 21, Kari was given a recording contract by a major Hollywood label. Part of her contract involved receiving breast implants which, at the time, didn’t seem like such a big deal. Later, as Kari transitioned into an acting career, her implants began to become very painful and misshapen. Eventually, she decided to have them removed. Now, at the age of almost 46, Kari shares her story so that young women will learn to love themselves the way they are.
Kari has two young daughters, and The Doctors all applauded her for being a great role model for her family. Kari just wants her girls to be unique individuals, and for young women to understand that being pressured into surgery is wrong. Kari doesn’t claim that all surgery is bad, but in her case, she was pushed into something she wasn’t prepared for. “It’s a lifelong commitment,” she explained, and girls need to understand that.
Before she had her implants removed, Kari’s right breast encapsulated prior to filming a movie love scene. After this embarrassing incident, Kari decided she was “done” with her implants. Her implants, as well as scar and breast tissue, were removed.
The Drs: Breast Augmentation
Dr. Andrew Ordon explained how breast augmentation works. An incision is made, usually through the nipple, and a saline or silicone implant is inserted through the breast tissue. It’s normal for the body to form fibrous tissue around the implant, because it recognizes the implant as a foreign object. However, when the this capsule contracts, it can create an abnormal shape, like in Kari’s situation.
Kari Wuhrer: Breast Reconstruction Surgery
“I just wanted to be me,” Kari explained. After making the decision to remove her implants, Kari found an incredible doctor who performed reconstructive surgery. That, coupled with “a vat of amazing bras,” and Kari has definitely learned to love her new shape. “I wanted to project a certain strength of character,” she added, and it seems that’s already a mission accomplished.
