The Doctors: Why Do Dogs Sniff Underwear?
By now, The Doctors are used to answering our most embarrassing TMI Tuesday questions. However, what about embarrassing questions related to our canine companions? We all know that dogs have embarrassing behaviors, too. Helping the Doctors sort through some TMI Tuesday pet problems was veterinarian Dr. Courtney Campbell.
Has your dog ever sniffed your underwear? It’s a little awkward and embarrassing, but for one Doctors viewer, this problem was taken to the extreme; her dog actually enjoys eating her underwear. In fact, he once pulled out a pair of “granny panties” in front of her friends. She wanted an answer to the question, why do dogs sniff underwear?
Canine Sense Of Smell
Dr. Campbell explained that dogs like underwear for one simple reason: it smells like their owners. For dogs, their noses are their gateway to the world. They have 200 million receptors in their nose, which is about 40 times more powerful than the human sense of smell.
Dogs enjoy sniffing underwear because it contains a lot of powerful scents, pheromones and smells. Unfortunately, this is particularly true when women have their periods. OB/GYN Dr. Jennifer Ashton has experienced this problem with her own dog – so much so that she needs to hide her garbage under the sink! During that time of the month – or if your dog just likes to snack on underwear – use baby proof locks to keep your skivvies out of their reach.
Dog owners looking to solve this issue can also try spraying something bitter on the underwear in order to “un-train” the behavior. Dr. Travis Stork used bitter sprays on his dog when she was a puppy in order to discourage her from eating furniture.
