The Doctors: Diabetes Management
More than 25 million Americans suffer from Diabetes, and estimates suggest that ⅓ of Americans could develop the disease in their lifetimes. But weight management is a good way to take control of your Diabetes Risk.
Registered Dietician Molly Gee joined The Doctors to share some small changes we can make.
Type 1 Diabetes
This type of Diabetes is most commonly found in children, whose bodies aren’t producing insulin to function.
Type 2 Diabetes
Historically, Type 2 Diabetes occurred mostly in adults. But more and more, it is affecting the youth population as well. These patients’ bodies don’t produce enough insulin to meet their needs.
The Drs TV: Effects Of Diabetes
Molly Gee explained that Glucose is a simple sugar found in food, but a Diabetic person’s body can’t break that down, elevating their blood sugar levels.
Long term effects of Diabetes can affect the eyes, heart, kidney, and even nervous system. These can be serious consequences.
Dr. Andrew Ordon explained that family history and being overweight are the biggest risk factors for developing Diabetes.
How To Lose Weight For Diabetics
Melvyn Jean Howard is an audience member who has suffered from Type 2 Diabetes for over 20 years. She wants to lose weight to avoid complications, but she hasn’t been successful so far.
Dr. Jim said that exercising and losing weight, along with managing blood sugar, are keys to avoiding complications. He stressed the importance of fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Losing only 5 to 10% of body weight can make a big dent in Diabetes.
Type 2 Diabetes Group Weight Loss
Molly Gee said she is working on a study to help adults with Type 2 Diabetes, like Melvyn Jean, find solutions.
“People with diabetes, if they attended group classes, exercised, and used meal replacements, they had a sustained weight loss and improvement in their glucose levels,” she said.
The Doctors: Glucerna Hunger Smart Review
Weight loss is challenging, especially if you have a busy schedule. Molly recommended the Glucerna Hunger Smart shakes and bars, designed for Diabetics. But she said to check in with your doctor before making this type of dietary change.
These Glucerna products contain Carb Steady, a slowly digested carbohydrate for glucose management. Dr. Jim explained that not all carbs are the same, and slower acting carbs can help you better sustain your levels over time.
The Doctors: Secondhand Smoke & ADHD
A new Public Service Announcement reminds everyone about the dangers of Secondhand Smoke. Dr. Travis Stork said the effects of Secondhand Smoke can be deadly.
Dr. Jim said studies are showing more effects of Secondhand Smoke on children, in addition to physical effects such as asthma and allergies. He said now studies are showing an 50% higher risk of developing neurological issues such as ADHD.
Secondhand Smoke Aversion Therapy
Additionally, Dr. Jim said studies found that children who have a negative reaction to their first encounter with cigarette smoke are 78% less likely to ever start smoking. This may suggest that you could use aversion therapy to give your kids a bad impression of smoking, around age five or six.
Dr. Travis said quitting smoking will improve your health, and the health of your friends and family. Your body will start to undo the damage of smoking, and it can make your entire family healthier.
