The Doctors: Surgical Procedure Performed On Wrong Newborn

The Doctors acknowledged that mistakes can happen, but a mix-up at University Medical Center in Lebanon, Tennessee led to a surgery being performed on the wrong newborn baby. A woman gave birth to a perfectly healthy baby boy but not long after, the baby went for a routine physical and was brought back a few hours later. The nurse mentioned the procedure they had done, where they had clipped the baby’s tongue. A doctor, without the parents’ signed consent, had performed the surgery on baby Nate that was actually meant for another child. The procedure involves cutting the tissue underneath the tongue.

While the mix-up is uncommon, it has certainly happened before. Dr Travis Stork said he was thankful that the procedure was just to snip the tissue, rather than a more serious procedure. The child who accidently received the procedure should have no future complications as a result of the surgery. Dr Jennifer Ashton said it should be like a military checkpoint before performing the procedure. They should’ve taken necessary precautions to ensure that they have the correct baby and are performing the right surgery. She wondered why those steps weren’t taken in this case. The doctor did later apologize and didn’t make any excuses for the error.

The Doctors: Sugar In Starbucks’ Drinks

Next, in a Doctors’ Special Report, it was reported that the nutrition advocady group Action on Sugar is blowing the whistle on the alarming amount of sugar contained in a lot of Starbucks drinks. The group recently released a report that found many Starbucks drinks have more sugar than a can of Coca Cola. Examples cited in the report include a Venti Chai Tea Latte, which contains 13 teaspoons of sugar and a Venti White Chocolate Mocha with whipped cream, that contains 18 teaspoons of sugar.

A Starbucks spokesperson stated that the company plans to reduce its sugar content in its drinks over the next five years.

The Doctors: Subway Serving Antibiotic-Free Chicken

After a large amount of pressure was put on Subway to use chicken raised without antibiotics, the company finally caved and began selling antibiotic-free chicken. They also claim that  by 2025, all meat in their North American restaurants will be antibiotic-free. A food policy expert at Consumer Union said “this is a problem that’s been brewing for decades and is getting seriously worse” when asked about antibiotics in meat.

Back in September, Consumer Union gave Subway, Burger King, Wendy’s, and Denny’s a failing grade for their use of antibiotics in meat. Only Panera and Chipotle received high marks for providing antibiotic-free meals. According to the CDC, one in five drug-resistant infections is caused by germs from foods containing or animals raised with antibiotics.

The Doctors: Jared Fogle Prison Weight Gain

The Doctors also reported that Subway’s former spokesperson Jared Fogle has reportedly gained 30 pounds while in prison. Subway’s campaign that featured Fogle, highlighted his weight loss by eating Subway sandwiches. The convicted pedophile is now serving a 15-year sentence in Colorado. “In Touch” magazine reported that the 38-year-old father of two loves eating cake from the dining hall and eats Honey Buns by the box.
