The Doctors: How Stress Affects Your Skin
It may seem hard to believe, but you can actually help manage uncomfortable and unsightly skin conditions, just by managing your stress! Stress face symptoms actually show up all the time. Dr Glynis Ablon pointed out that stress affects every organ of our body, including our skin. Rosacia is a great example, with approximately 80% of cases triggered by stress. When looking at a skin condition, it’s about a lot more than just medication. It’s important to look at a patient’s life as a whole, and better understand whether stress could be a major contributing factor. Dr Ablon will use topicals or prescription medications, but she’ll also recommend meditation, yoga, and breathing techniques to help with their stress.
Dr Ablon is the author of “What’s Stressing Your Face,” because she suffered from skin conditions in her own life. Her mom spent eleven days in the ICU, and the stress of that on top of taking care of her own kids, caused her to wake up with Bell’s palsy. She was paralyzed on one side of her face. She got back to a lower stress level as much as possible, knowing how damaging stress was in her own life.
She’s also had patients come in with unexplained rashes, and has suggested ways to lower their stress on top of medications that will help their condition improve.
