The Doctors: Joan Rivers Death
Joan Rivers died on September 4 2014 following an endoscopy procedure, but there have been many questions about what really happened, according to The Doctors. There are reports that they did an unauthorized biopsy on her vocal cords and that a doctor took a selfie with her while she was under anesthesia. That’s so inappropriate. Should this have even been an outpatient procedure for an 81-year-old woman? She also hadn’t consented for the biopsy. It might not have been the cause, but it’s still not okay. Lastly, there shouldn’t have been such distractions in the ER. But again, the whole selfie thing could all just be a rumor.
The Doctors: Consent Forms
There are unexpected things that could happen in the operating room, some of which could be diagnostic. It’s okay as long as the consent form says, “all indicated procedures.” If it doesn’t say that or the patient doesn’t understand what’s happening then that’s a problem.
The Doctors: The VIP Syndrome
The whole selifie thing is called “The VIP Syndrome,” which is when there’s a celebrity or high profile patient and it becomes more about the doctor than the patient. They forget that everyone under sedation is at risk for death, and these doctors should not be getting too comfortable. Rivers was having a relatively simple procedure, but things can happen.
And Rivers’ age should have been a huge consideration. They should have been extra cautious because of that. A person in their 80s who’s in perfect health can start to act their age very quickly when things go wrong. That said, nobody knows what happened that day. But you need to make sure that you go to a place with doctors that you trust when you’re having a procedure done, particularly when you’re having a procedure that involves sedation done. It’s so important that you educate yourself on what’s going to happen to you and that you trust the people doing it.
The Doctors: #SMOCK Video with Orlando Jones
In more positive news, The Doctors showed their #SMOCK, or Simple Moments of Contagious Kindness, video of the week with Orlando Jones. He went up to a man at a gas station and offered to pay for his gas. He even went into the station and paid for him. That was really sweet. You can post your own #SMOCK videos, of course.
