The Drs: Pug Handstand While Urinating
Dr Jennifer Berman shared a video that has gotten hundreds of thousands of hits on Facebook, but she wanted to know if what she was seeing was normal. The video showed a pug who walked on his front legs for 67 seconds all he while producing a steady stream of urine.
Veterinarian Courtney Campbell joined the show and said it was the most gymnastic pug he’s ever seen. He said dogs are incredible adaptive, but he was concerned both about why the urine stream was going on for so long, as well as why the stream isn’t strong. He said it’s possible that it’s painful for the dog to urinate normally, or maybe the dog just enjoys urinating that way. If you see your dog doing that, take them to the vet just to be sure.
The Drs: Can Pets Have OCD?
The Doctors then shared a video of a cat who appears to have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) because of its compulsion to flick a piece of paper over and over. Dr Campbell said cats love paper and boxes so he highly doubts that the cat has OCD. He did say that if you have a cat that likes to chew on fabric or does some dangerous things because of a compulsive disorder, that’s different.
He said if your pet is engaging in compulsive behavior, see your vet. But that cat probably just likes paper.
The Drs: Treating OCD In Animals
To treat OCD in an animal, Dr Courtney Campbell said you should distract them and encourage better behavior with positive reinforcement whether with a treat or a toy. He said there are also medications that vets use all the time for OCD in pets.
Now if only I could blame OCD for why my dog keeps getting into diapers!
