If you’ve ever wanted pie and cheddar cheese at the same time, Carla Hall’s Apple Pie Recipe with Cheddar Crumble is here for you.

  • 1/2 of a Pie Crust
  • 2 peeled and cored tart Apples (cut into 1/2-inch chunks) For this, Carla Hall used Granny Smith apples.
  • 1 peeled and cored sweet Apple (cut into 1/2-inch chunks) For this, Carla Hall used Gala Apples.
  • 2 tablespoons of All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon of Cinnamon (freshly ground)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Nutmeg (freshly ground)
  • 1/4 teaspoon of Allspice (ground)
  • 1/4 cup of Brown Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of Granulated Sugar
  • 1 Lemon for Zest and Juice
  • A pinch of salt

For the Cheddar Crumble Topping:

  • 1/3 cup of Cheddar Cheese (finely grated) You can use just about any hard cheese you want for this.
  • 1/4 cup of All-Purpose Flour
  • 2 tablespoons of Brown Sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of cubed and cold Butter (Unsalted)
  • A pinch of salt
  • 1 Egg whisked in 1 tablespoon Water
  • Turbinado Sugar (for sprinkling)
  • A pinch of salt (for sprinkling)

The Chew: Apple Pie with Cheddar Crumble Directions

  1.  Set the oven to 435 fahrenheit and let it preheat.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the sugars, flour, and spices.
  3. Add the lemon juice, lemon zest, apples, and salt to the mixture.
  4. Toss the mixture to coat the apples. Then, set this aside.
  5. If you want, you can add the cheddar to your pie crust, as well, for all you cheese heads out there.

For the Cheddar Crumble Topping: 

  1. Combine the cheese and flour together in a medium bowl and mix them together until they are incorporated.
  2. Throw in the butter, the pinch of salt, and the brown sugar.
  3. Crumble the mixture together using a pastry blender, fork, or your fingers.
  4. Flour a surface of your choice, and roll the pie down on it until it is at 1/4-inch thickness.
  5. Take your apple mixture and add it to the center of the dough, allowing it to mound up.
  6. Sprinkle the crumble topping over the apples into an even layer.
  7. In even layers, sprinkle the cheddar crumble over the apples. Then fold the edges of the dough over the apples.
  8. Take egg whites and brush the pie dough with them. Then, sprinkle it with the turbinado sugar and some salt.
  9. Place n oven for 35 to 40 minutes, then allow to sit out until it is at room temperature before you serve it.
