Actor Andrew Rannells was thrilled to join The Chew for a second time, but admitted that his mom may just be more excited than him. The Falsettos star was excited to be on the show while the hosts were discussing Thanksgiving and their best stuffing recipes. But not too surprisingly, Clinton Kelly wanted to get a little creative. He transformed frozen tator tots into a recipe for what could become your new favorite stuffing! This Crispy Safe Tator Tot Stuffing will certainly surprise anyone seeing it for the first time, but you won’t hear a peep out of them once they take a bite!

The Chew: Crispy Sage Tator Tot Stuffing Recipe

Clinton Kelly’s Crispy Sage Tator Tot Stuffing is a surprisingly unique take on the Thanksgiving side dish, but the crispy potatoes were an absolute hit! (j_regan / Flickr)

  • canola oil – for frying
  • 1 small onion – peeled, small dice
  • 2 tbsp sage – chopped
  • 1 C Pullman loaf – toasted, 1/4-inch dice
  • 1/2 C whole milk
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 5 tbsp butter – divided
  • 1 bag frozen tator tots (2 lbs)
  • 2 ribs celery – small dice
  • 3 tsp thyme leaves – chopped
  • 1 large egg – beaten
  • ketchup – to serve

For the Turkey Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp flour
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 2 tbsp pan drippings (from Thanksgiving turkey)
  • 1 1/2 C turkey stock or chicken stock

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch casserole dish with 1 tbsp butter
  3. Preheat the oil in a Dutch oven or tabletop fryer to 375 degrees
  4. Dry the frozen tator tots until golden and crispy, according to package directions
  5. Remove the tots to a paper towel-lined plate
  6. In a large saute pan, add the rest of the butter and heat over medium
  7. Add the celery and onions and cook for about 7 minutes until lightly browned and tender
  8. Add the thyme and sage, then stir and season with salt and pepper
  9. Remove to a large bowl to cool slightly
  10. Add the tator tots and bread to the bowl and toss
  11. In a small bowl, add the milk and eggs and whisk to combine
  12. Pour the mixture over the tator tots and carefully toss to combine
  13. Pour into the prepared casserole dish
  14. Bake for 10 minutes covered, then 10-15 additional minutes uncovered, until golden and crispy
  15. Serve with ketchup and turkey gravy

For the Turkey Gravy:

  1. In a medium saute pan, add the turkey drippings and heat over medium
  2. Add the flour and whisk to form a paste
  3. While whisking, slowly pour in the stock and bring to a simmer
  4. Cook until thicken and season with salt and pepper
