The Chew: Anthony Anderson Blackish
It’s a celebration for everyone that Blackish has done so well on television, because for a while there, it looked like sitcoms and television shows centering on black characters could no longer survive on broadcast television. Blackish’s success means that studios will take more chances on television shows centering on people of color, which is great because it frees the television landscape to tell any stories it wants to. This means a much more creative arena for new shows.
When I was a kid, my favorite show in the universe was Family Matters. It didn’t matter to me what race the characters were or that their race was different from my own. I just really loved Steve Urkel and his relationship to Carl Winslow. I think it’s great that Blackish is doing so well. I hope its success leads to a TV landscape where television actually reflects the world we live in, with plenty of diversity, and to have that be so commonplace that we don’t need to talk about what race the characters of a TV show are anymore. Unless the show wants us to have that conversation, which Blackish certainly does.
In the meantime, though, Blackish is hilarious and so is Anthony Anderson, and he’s coming by The Chew to whip up some great meals with The Chew crew, bringing his charisma and hilarity with him.
