Leave it to Bob Harper to find a way to transform a typically greasy, fatty meal into one actually good for your body! The fitness guru joined Rachael Ray to share one of his favorite dinner recipes. He explained, and Rachael agreed with him, that as long as you season it properly, ground turkey can be a great way to lighten up a recipe without sacrificing flavor. You don’t have to stick with a boring hamburger anymore! Be sure to use multigrain or whole-wheat hamburger buns and you’ve got a recipe that’s practically entirely guilt-free. Normally I’d be appalled at the thought of a burger without cheese, but believe me, this recipe doesn’t even need it!

Rachael Ray: Bob Harper Taco Turkey Burgers Recipe

  • 2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp Mexican oregano
  • 1 jalapeno – seeded, diced
  • 1 small red onion – finely chopped
  • 1 avocado – diced
  • 4 multigrain or whole wheat hamburger buns – toasted
  • 1 vine tomato – sliced into 4 slices
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground turkey breast
  • 2 tsp ground coriander
  • 2 cloves garlic – grated or finely chopped
  • salt and pepper
  • juice of 1 lime
  • 3 tbsp fresh cilantro – chopped
  • 4 leaves Bibb or Romaine lettuce

  1. Preheat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat
  2. In a large mixing bowl, mix the cumin, oregano, jalapeno, garlic, coriander, salt, pepper, and turkey
  3. Shape the seasoned meat into 4 equal-size patties
  4. Add olive oil to the pan and cook the burgers on one side for about 3-4 minutes, until done halfway through
  5. Flip the burgers and cook for another 3 minutes, until done
  6. While the burgers are cooking, prepare the guacamole
  7. In a medium mixing bowl, mix the red onion, salt, and lime juice
  8. Let sit for 10-15 minutes to allow the salt to draw the liquid out of the onions
  9. Mix in the avocado, cilantro, and a dash of pepper
  10. Build the burgers by placing the meat on the bun bottom, then top with lettuce, tomato and guacamole
  11. Set the tops in place and serve with a side salad
