Live With Kelly & Michael: Amar’e Stoudemire

From the New York Knicks, NBA star Amar’e Stoudemire came to play with Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan. The formidable forward even dwarfed Kelly’s giant new co-host. He talked about his career on the courts and his latest project, the children’s book series STAT: Standing Tall and Talented.

Michael Strahan: Amar’e Stoudemire Entourage

Kelly credited Amar’e with igniting fans and the New York Knicks since joining the team. Michael recalled that he played opposite Amar’e in a scene from the HBO series Entourage. He couldn’t go into much detail, because he said it was an R-rated show.

As an athlete, father, and now author, Michael asked Amar’e if he feels responsible for being a role model to young people.

“I think we’ve been put on a platform, to where we have an opportunity to be positive influences to the youth,” he said. “We should take more of an effort to try to be that type of positive influence for them, because they look for us to set a blueprint out for them.”

If you follow professional sports even casually (or entertainment, for that matter), you probably know that not everyone feels this way about their time in the spotlight. And it’s even more refreshing to see someone put action behind their words.

STAT: Standing Tall and Talented Review

Kelly mentioned that Amar’e father died when the future NBA star was just 12. Amar’e said he was close to his father, and missed having him in his life as he grew up. That was part of the inspiration for him to write his new book, he explained.

The co-hosts agreed that fathers have important role in children’s lives, and Amar’e said he hopes his book, STAT: Standing Tall and Talented: Home Court, will get kids reading and connect with young people who may not have a paternal influence in their lives.

Challenge with the Champions: Amar’e Stoudemire

Kelly is breaking in her new co-host this week with one of Gelman’s themes. They are facing off against professional athletes for Challenge with the Champions week. Previously, they teamed up with US Women’s Gymnastics gold medalists.

Today, they took on Amar’e Stoudemire, wearing brand new New York Knicks jerseys, which were making their debut on the show. Kelly pointed out that she and Amar’e were wearing the same size. He said his was snug, but on Kelly, it went down at least to her knees.

Papa Shot: Kelly & Michael Strahan Vs Amar’e Stoudemire

The stars were facing off in a round of Papa Shot to see who could make the most baskets in one minute. Amar’e had the advantage of the longest reach, and Kelly proudly bragged throughout the competition that she is “the worst.”

Yesterday, the two co-hosts tied one another. How did the results come out today in a three-way head-to-head competition?

  • Kelly Ripa: 27
  • Michael Strahan: 42
  • Amar’e Stoudemire: 42

Kelly tried to protest that “the lowest score wins,” and Michael challenged Amar’e to a tiebreaker rematch. Since they ran out of time, you’ll have to catch the rematch on the Live! website.
