Live Top Teacher Week: Rick Zano From Princess Anne High School
Each year, Live’s Top Teacher Week celebrates the best and most inspiring educators from coast to coast. Each day this week, Live! will be showcasing one of their Top Teacher finalists. Eventually, it will be up to home viewers to decide who wins the title of Top Teacher of the Year. First up was Roderick “Rick” Zano, a dedicated history teacher with some pretty unusual methods!
Every day at Princess Anne High School in Virginia Beach is a learning experience with Mr. Zano. His colleagues and students had nothing but glowing words for the man who is “like a celebrity” at his school. In fact, Rick graduated from Princess Anne himself in 1988, and was inspired by his own history teacher Ms. Watson.
Aside from his dedication and work ethic (he also coaches girls tennis), Mr. Zano is known for his creative approach to learning. In the classroom, he dresses up as historical figures so that his students not only laugh, but feel engaged with their learning material. He’s dressed as Napoleon, Captain America, Marie Antoinette and even shaves his head each year to dress as Gandhi. One of Mr. Zano’s most outrageous costumes was Lady Gaga, which he wore to a school benefit for autism.
“I consider myself very fortunate to do what I love, and love what I do,” Mr. Zano said.
Live Top Teacher Week: Rick Zano Trip To Rome
Rick Zano entered the Live! studio dressed as Napoleon to a standing ovation. Everyone was clearly impressed by his exciting approach to learning. As a “thank you” for all his great work, Rick received 30 Intel Thinkpad tablets for his classroom, as well as a 10 day trip to Italy for himself and his wife, who is also a teacher.
Rick said that he and his wife had wanted to go to Rome for their honeymoon, but went to West Virginia instead. Now, Rick will have the chance to bring back even more incredible stories – and costumes – for his students.
Stay tuned all this week for more incredible teachers like Mr. Zano and their stories.
