Kelly & Michael: Bow Wow Week

Bow Wow Week on Live! is a celebration of our favorite furry friends: our dogs. Are you looking to add a new pet to your family? A dog is an incredible friend for both you and your family, but before you adopt, you should find the breed that works best for you all. Of course, adopting from a shelter is very important. You can choose any dog you like (even purebreds), plus, you’ll be saving a life. Why go to a pet store or breeder when 10,000 animals are killed in shelters every single day? As someone who has adopted a shelter dog, Kelly highly recommends it.

Veterinarian Dr Karen Halligan joined Kelly & Michael to discuss several different dog breeds that might work for you. Let’s take a look at a few of them!

Dr Karen Halligan: Choosing the Right Dog Breed

Many families want to make sure that their dog will be great with children. Dr Halligan suggests Boxers, Collies, King Charles Cavalier Spaniels, Labs, and Bull dogs. Also, another kid-friendly breed is the Great Pyrenees. With their gorgeous white coats, they are known as “gentle giants.”

If you live in an apartment, you’ll need a smaller dog with low energy, like Pugs, Pomeranians, and Shih Tzus (like Chuy). Also, if you travel a lot, you’ll also want a small dog. A Dachshund could also work well.

On the contrary, if you’ve got a lot of space, a high energy dog will enjoy running around outdoors with you and your family. Dalmatians and Golden Retrievers make great country dogs.

Best Dogs for Allergies

If you’ve got allergies, well, there’s no such thing as a 100% hypo-allergenic dog. However, there are certain breeds that don’t shed, and will create less dander. Portuguese Water Dogs, Poodles, and Wheaten Terriers are the closest things you can get to hypo-allergenic.

All of the dogs that were featured on the show today are up for adoption. For information on how to adopt one of these precious pets, head to the Live! site.
