Nelly Furtado is a Canadian singer-songwriter originally from Victoria, British Columbia. Nelly’s unusual name comes from the Russian gymnast Nellie Kim. The young singer first rose to fame with her debut album, Whoa, Nelly! which spawned her Juno and Grammy Award winning single, “I’m Like a Bird.” The folk-influenced album was released in October 2000.

Nelly has since released several albums, including her highest-selling release, 2006’s Loose. During the making of the album, Nelly collaborated with such huge artists as Justin Timberlake and Timbaland. This album spawned three worldwide mega-hits: “Promiscuous,” “Say it Right,” and “Maneater.”

Nelly is of Portuguese descent, and her both of her parents are immigrants to Canada from the Azores, a chain of islands off the coast of Portugal. Nelly speaks both Portuguese and Spanish, and released her debut Spanish language album, Mi Plan, in 2009. This album garnered Nelly another important accolade: her first Latin Grammy.

Now, the acclaimed singer-songwriter is back with a new album called The Spirit Indestructible. The exciting new album is influenced by genres such as reggae, alternative, and folk, and has attracted producers such as The Neptunes and once again, Timbaland.
