Robin Thicke & Paula Patton
Award-winning R&B singer and songwriter Robin Thicke came out to join Kelly and Taye, looking very handsome in a burgundy velvet blazer which they both complimented (Taye also really liked his shoes.) Kelly immediately asked him how his wife, actress Paula Patton, was doing. Robin said that she was great, and they discussed and showed a picture of his adorable 2-year-old son, Julian. Julian is not sleeping through the night, either, so Taye joked that their kids can have a play-date where they stay awake together.
Kelly pointed out that many people have attributed Robin’s music to helping them make their babies, so she asked if, when it was time to make Julian, his own music was playing. Robin laughed and said that he can’t listen to his own music in that situation because he just keeps thinking about technical things like the sound levels of the bass. Robin revealed that he and Paula met when they were just 14 years old, at a teen summer dance club. He saw her in the middle of the dance floor and said it was a “magical moment.” She didn’t think he could dance, but then he started dancing and singing in front of her, and he eventually charmed her. Kelly and Taye then demonstrated an awkward 14-year-old “zombie” dance, but Robin assured them his dancing was a lot better than that.
Robin Thicke: “Duets” on ABC
Robin then talked about his new singing competition show on ABC, “Duets.” On the show, four accomplished singers– Robin, John Legend, Kelly Clarkson, and Jennifer Nettles– will choose aspiring singers to team up with and perform duets.
Robin said that the show is a lot more difficult than he imagined, because he is not simply judging people, but actually has to learn and prepare the songs himself. Kelly Clarkson said that “Duets” was way harder than “American Idol,” which she won back in 2002. At first he was just excited to share his music with America, but he said that once he got to know the contestants and care about them, the focus turned to them.
Live With Kelly: Robin Thicke Sings “All Tied Up”
Later in the show, Robin returned to perform a song with his signature soulful voice, which was backed by a full band and back-up singers. He sang a brand new song, “All Tied Up,” off of his latest album, Love After War. The album is Robin’s fifth full-length LP. At the end of the performance, Kelly proclaimed that his is real “baby-making music.”
