Live With Kelly: Kerry Washington
Kerry Washington is an accomplished actress who has starred in film, television, and theatre. She has appeared in acclaimed films such as Ray and The Last King of Scotland, as well as TV dramas like Boston Legal. Kerry currently stars as Washington power player Olivia Pope on ABC’s Scandal, which just wrapped up a successful first season. She stopped by Live With Kelly to talk about her show, as well as some projects both past and future.
As the hosts welcomed Kerry to the show, Kelly noticed some sexual chemistry between Kerry and Neil. Kerry revealed that she is a big fan, and Neil told her, “you smell nice.”
Kerry Washington: Quentin Tarantino Django Unchained
Kerry has recently been spending time in New Orleans, where she is filming the highly anticipated new Quentin Tarantino film, Django Unchained. She said that she does not play Django, but she does become unchained.
The film stars some hugely talented actors, including Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Samuel L. Jackson; as Kerry put it, “a bunch of people you’ve never heard of.”
Kerry is a lucky woman– she’s pretty much the only one on set. She explained the film as an “epic love and rescue story set in the 1800s.” Jamie Foxx plays a freed slave who must rescue his wife, played by Kerry, from an evil plantation owner, played by Leonardo DiCaprio. It sounds exciting, right?!
Kerry Washington: After School Special
Kerry has been acting since she was fourteen, but said that she never really expected to make a living out of doing it. She started in school plays, mostly as just a hobby. Kerry became very nervous when Neil revealed that they had a clip of one of her earliest acting gigs; it was an after school special on ABC called “Magical Makeover.”
They showed the clip, and it turned out to not be too embarrassing– at least not for Kerry. The girl next to her had huge, outdated hair. Kelly said, “see– they did have big hair in the early 90s!”
Kerry Washington: Scandal Season 1
Scandal is Kerry’s ABC show which was created by Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes. Kelly, Neil, and Kerry watched a dramatic clip from the show’s Season 1 finale, in which Kerry’s character, Olivia Pope, discovers a dead body that she has to cover up.
In the scene, Kerry is wearing a white trench coat. Kerry said that everyone started asking her if the coat got any blood on it. Kelly pointed out that Kerry’s character wears a lot of white, which symbolizes purity. Kerry explained that Olivia Pope’s lightly colored wardrobe contrasts all of the darkness and controversy in Washington, D.C., which the show centers on. The light colors also balance her tough disposition. However, the character of Olivia is having an affair with the President, so she can’t be all that pure!
Keep an eye out for Django Unchained in theaters in December, and watch Season One of “Scandal” which is now out on DVD.
