Live With Kelly: Julianne Hough Dancing with the Stars Alum
You might remember Julianne Hough from her days as a pro dancer on Dancing with the Stars. She and her brother, Derek, both began dancing at a very young age, and were students of ballroom dancers Corky and Shirley Ballas; they would later work with the Ballas’s son, Mark, on Dancing with the Stars. After five seasons of the show– and being crowned back-to-back champion on seasons 4 and 5– Julianne decided to leave and pursue other interests.
Those interests have led to a self-titled country album, several film and TV appearances, and now, the upcoming summer blockbuster Rock of Ages. Julianne joined Kelly and Neil to talk about the movie, her boyfriend Ryan Seacrest, and her surprising film debut.
Kelly told Julianne that when she was on Dancing with the Stars, she stuck out as being very special. Neil complimented her ability to so successfully switch from dancing full-time to becoming an actress. Julianne revealed that she convinced her parents to let her move to London at age ten. That is where she made her film debut in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Julianne Hough: Harry Potter Extra
Kelly and Neil showed a screen shot of a young Julianne standing next to Rupert Grint in a scene from Harry Potter. She was hired to be an extra on the film because she was attending school in London at the time, and the film actually hired her entire school to participate. As a Harry Potter fan, Julianne actually stole the Gryffindor house scarf that she wore in the scene, but someone searched her bag and took it back.
Julianne also revealed her childhood crush on Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe. When she was eleven years old, she sent him a Beanie Baby and wrote him a love not that never got a reply. She has actually seen Daniel a lot since then, but she is too embarrassed to re-introduce herself. Kelly said, “now you’re stuck with Ryan Seacrest.” Julianne surprisingly joked, “they’re both short men!”
Julianne Hough: Boyfriend Ryan Seacrest
For about two years, Julianne has been in a relationship with American Idol host Ryan Seacrest. On Idol, he recently played a potentially embarrassing prank on Julianne. He acted like he was about to propose to her, but he actually ended up handing her a note for Tom Cruise instead.
Kelly asked Julianne if she thought he would actually propose. Julianne said that at first, she knew he would never do it in front of so many people, but then she got nervous when Ryan’s eyes started to water. Apparently, any time he is nervous or says something heartfelt, he gets teary eyes.
Live With Kelly: Julianne Hough Rock of Ages
Rock of Ages is Julianne’s latest film, which is based on the popular Broadway musical of the same name. The film features an all-star cast including Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin, Russell Brand, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Paul Giamatti.
Kelly turned to Neil and said, “how are you not in this movie?” Neil said that he actually was offered a role by director Adam Shankman, but he was unavailable at the time.
Julianne has done other musical films like last year’s Footloose remake, so Neil asked Julianne if she would like to be known as a musical actress. Julianne explained that, since dancing, singing, and acting are her favorite things, acting in musicals was an easy transition. However, she does have some non-musical films currently in the works, including one with Diablo Cody.
Rock of Ages opens in theatres on June 15 2012. One thing that you won’t see is a scene where Julianne’s character gives Tom Cruise a lap dance; it was apparently too racy for the film, and got cut. You’ll just have to wait to catch it on the DVD!
