Kelly & Michael: Jena Malone Child Actress
Kelly Ripa said it’s amazing that Malone knew she wanted to act from the age of nine. Her mother was very involved in community theater, and that caught on with Jena, who grew up backstage for free babysitting.
She convinced her mother to move to Los Angeles when Jena was nine, and that was 19 years ago. Things seem to have worked out well, and she is also a singer. She created her own instrument out of a steamer trunk and some electronics.
You might find her and her bandmate on a street corner performing their music. But Jena said that she does not seem to get recognized. She calls her instrument kit The Shoe, and she also performs percussion on the side of the case. It sounds like a great workout!
“It’s nice to have a lot of different outlets,” Malone said.

Kelly & Michael: Jena Malone Catching Fire
In The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, Malone portrays Johanna Mason from District 7, and she did have to learn how to handle an ax for the film. The cast went through months of training to learn all the stunts and get in shape.
Maybe ax wielding will be the next trendy workout! Kelly told Jena about The Hunger Games candy bars. There is also a talked-about elevator scene where she has a naked scene. She was filming in a glass elevator in a hotel that was open while they were shooting.

She relied on her castmates to keep her centered. But on one of the takes, the elevator doors opened and she ran into a hotel employee who was shocked to see her in a state of undress. Filming that scene took almost an entire day.
Kelly said that if actors are going to bare skin, they should do it early in their careers, “before gravity hits.” In a clip from the movie, Jena is giving some advice to Jennifer Lawrence’s character. See The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in theaters now.
