Katie Couric: The Wanted Perform & The Zachary Sobiech Story

The Zachary Sobiech story is about a boy diagnosed with cancer that turned to music in his final years of life.

When he was 14, Zachary Sobiech was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that primarily strikes children. Zachary underwent 10 surgeries and 20 rounds of chemotherapy as treatment. Instead of looking at this diagnosis as a good reason to stop caring, he saw it as a great reason to start living.

Immediately after the diagnosis, he started writing song lyrics, because he had always wanted to be a musician. He formed the band “A Firm Handshake” with friends Samantha “Sammy” Brown and Reed Redmond, and by May 2012, his doctors had informed him that he had a year to live.

In response, the band recorded the song “Clouds” and released an album titled Fix Me Up.

The song, which was about Zachary’s battle with cancer, went live on YouTube in December 2012 and almost immediately went viral. At the time of his death on May 20, 2013, “Clouds” had surpassed 3 million views.

Check out the rest of the Zachary Sobiech story on tomorrow’s show.

The Wanted are going to be performing a song May 31 on Katie Couric, and I can only assume that it will be off their most recent release, 2012’s The Wanted (EP). The EP is loaded with singles such as “Glad You Came,” “Chasing The Sun,” and “All Time Low,” so it’s really hard to say which one they will perform.

Which one are you hoping they’ll perform for us tomorrow? Go to the comments and let us know!
