Overnight, Angelina Jolie has revealed that she had a double mastectomy in order to prevent breast cancer. She told The New York Times, “My doctors estimated that I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer. Angelina’s decision weighed heavily on the fact that her mother died of ovarian cancer at age 56 and she did not want to share that fate. Her procedures began in total secrecy in February and were just recently completed in April. Angelina’s partner, Brad Pitt, stayed by her side throughout the duration of her double mastectomy. “We managed to find times to laugh together. We knew this was the right thing to do for our family and that it would bring us closer. And it has,” she told The New York Times.

The Oscar winning actress and globe-trotting activist is now speaking out about her double mastectomy in hopes of saving other lives by living as an example for all women who might benefit from also having the procedure.
“…life comes with many challenges. The ones that should not scare us are the ones we can take on and take control of,” she told The New York Times.
Larry Hackett, People Magazine editor, pointed out that Angelina Jolie has always used her life for the greater good, through her work as an activist and adopting children from war-torn countries, and the tone of her interview was personal but broad in the way that it could help other people looking for a way to prevent cancer. Angelina Jolie now has a 5% chance of having breast cancer, down from the 87% before her double mastectomy.
