Going to the grocery store on an empty stomach can be lethal for your waist line and bank account. You think, “I’m hungry, so I’ll just buy something to eat when I go to the store.” Wrong.

A study recently released said that 23 percent more shoppers pick processed junk food when they go to the store on an empty stomach. Cornell University sent 68 shoppers to the grocery store. Half went hungry, and the other half ate Wheat Thins before shopping. The hungry group bought significantly more food and then continued to reach for the processed foods throughout the week.

The Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department in Queens, New York is getting help rebuilding after a fire and flood destroyed their community.

Good Morning America did a similar study. A hungry mom shopped for her family, while the journalist snacked on Wheat Thins before shopping. The results were clear, but did she shop healthier knowing that she had eaten the Wheat Thins? It seems like if you went to the store knowing you had a healthy snack and should shop healthier, you might not splurge on the Cheetos.

Point Breeze Volunteer Fire Department Gets Help From Habitat For Humanity & Direct Relief Fund

Sam Champion was out at Breezy Point in Queens, New York to give their fire department a huge surprise. Superstorm Sandy raged through the area, followed by a devastating fire that destroyed most of the community. The community called it “the Apocalypse.” The people credited their volunteer firefighters for saving the community. They never stopped fighting and the Point Breeze volunteer department is being rebuilt.

Sam Champion brought the community and a bagpipe band out to surprise the fire chief and his crew. Habitat for Humanity and Direct Relief fund donated supplies and funds to help the community rebuild. The fire department will get a second floor added on to prevent flooding from ruining everything again. Direct Relief gave them a check for $10,000.

The chief said that this is a dream and the people that have come to make a difference are guardian angels.
