GMA Goes Gatsby: Tobey Maguire
Robin Roberts interviewed the first star of The Great Gatsby appearing on Good Morning America this week, Tobey Maguire. He plays Nick Carraway in the film, out May 10 2013. This week, GMA takes us inside The Great Gatsby. As if we needed more reasons to be pumped about this film.
Tobey Maguire As Nick Carraway In The Great Gatsby
Maguire got a call from his good friend Leonardo DiCaprio about this film. He was just casually talking to Baz Luhrmann and wanted to kick around the idea of Maguire and DiCaprio as Nick and Gatsby. Maguire said he lived next door to DiCaprio at the time, so he didn’t have to travel far to talk about the role.
Let’s just stop there for a minute and imagine living in the same neighborhood as Tobey Maguire and Leonardo DiCaprio. That’s pretty much my happy place.
Baz Luhrmann: From Romeo + Juliet To The Great Gatsby
The crazy thing was that Tobey had never read The Great Gatsby. He read the book over two nights. This new film is a fresh take on The Great Gatsby while still staying true to the literature. It will create a full immersion into the story. Luhrmann, if you will remember, was the mastermind behind DiCaprio and Claire Danes in Romeo + Juliet. The film will be devastatingly beautiful.
Carey Mulligan Becomes Daisy Buchanan In The Great Gatsby
Maguire said that this cast is phenomenal. Besides DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire, the actress I’m dying to see is Carey Mulligan. She plays the role of Daisy Buchanan and couldn’t be more perfect. Nick Carraway is Daisy’s cousin and is thrown into the high society world.
Baz Luhrmann threw together a compilation of footage from screen tests of what he invisioned for the film. Maguire watched it and just had to hear a line from Carey Mulligan to know that she was Daisy. Robin Roberts agreed that Mulligan really becomes the role in this film.
Catherine Martin Designs Sets & Costumes For The Great Gatsby
If anything, Jay Gastby knew how to throw a party. Tobey Maguire said that people would snap photos and quick shots on their phones during filming. Catherine Martin designed the sets and costumes for this film. Maguire said she is one of his favorite people to work with. He said it all came together to tell the story beautifully.
