Angelina Jolie’s Aunt Debbie Martin Died of Breast Cancer
Overnight, news that Angelina Jolie’s aunt, Debbie Martin, passed away from breast cancer had the world once again questioning Jolie’s preventative double mastectomy. Martin was 61 and the younger sister of Jolie’s mother, Marcheline Bertrand, who died of ovarian cancer.
The sad news comes just two weeks after Angelina had a double mastectomy after finding a BRCA1 gene that could lead to breast cancer. Martin had the same faulty BRCA gene.
“Beacuse of the BRCA gene in the maternal side of the family, Angelina did the smartest thing on earth,” Debbie Martin’s husband told People Magazine. “it takes a lot of courage to have your breasts removed.”
Angelina Jolie’s New York Times OpEd About Double Mastectomy
Jolie wrote an OpEd piece in The New York Times about her decision to remove her breasts. “My doctors estimated I had an 87 percent risk of breast cancer. Once I knew that this was my reality, I decided to be pro-active and to minimize the risk as much as I could. I made a decision to have a preventative double mastectomy.”
Angelina Jolie went on to write about her mother. “She held out long enough to meet the first of her grandchildren and to hold them in her arms. But my other children will never have the chance to know her. We often speak of mommy’s mommy, I find myself trying to explain the illness that took her away from us. They have asked if the same coule happen to me.”
Angelina Jolie Removing Fallopian Tubes & Ovaries
Jolie began her process at the end of February and had the final procedures at the end of April. She said that she feels happy with her decision because her children won’t have to worry about losing her to breast cancer.
Jolie now only has a 5% risk of breast cancer and plans to remove her ovaries and Fallopian tubes soon. According to breast cancer research, every woman has a 12% risk of getting breast cancer.
