Ellen: Bayou Billionaires New Teeth

Ellen DeGeneres kicked off her show today by talking about something she can’t get enough of: TV. I hear that.

She is revisiting some of the latest crazy reality shows. Seriously, who comes up with these ideas? Ellen is checking back in on Bayou Billionaires, which follows a toothless family of rednecks who discover their land is on top of an oil goldmine.

Now they’re rich, and Ellen has been following their adventures as they buy each of their family members new teeth. But would you believe that one of the family members was reluctant to get new teeth?

Ellen: Penguin Crime

A clip from "Frozen Planet" showed Ellen that even penguins aren't above a life of crime.

He eventually relented and agreed to get a set of teeth “for weddings and funerals,” provided they were embellished with diamonds. You can’t make this stuff up.

Ellen Doomsday Preppers Reality Show

How do you think the world will end? The Mayans predicted that 2012 would be the end of the world, and a new reality show chronicles some people’s efforts to prepare for the eventual apocalypse.

Ellen showed a clip from the Doomsday Preppers show, featuring a seemingly nice young man with stores of food and supplies. At first, everything seemed great as he explained he would share the wealth with others in the end times. But then he announced he would poison anyone he didn’t need around. I guess that’s survival of the fittest.

I don’t think I’ll be stockpiling for the end of the world anytime soon. My apartment building has a leaky basement, and I don’t even have that much room for regular groceries, let alone apocalypse supplies.

Ellen: Penguin Thief on Frozen Planet

Ellen said she and Portia De Rossi enjoy the Discovery Channel series Frozen Planet, which is one of the few reality shows that don’t exploit people. The clip Ellen showed featured the lives of Penguins. The male Penguins built nests of stones to try to attract females to mate with.

They even captured one rogue penguin stealing stones collected by another. It was hilarious to watch one penguin committing theft while his neighbor’s back was turned. I haven’t had a chance to watch this show yet, but now I’m really curious to see what Ellen is talking about.

Have you seen any of these shows? Which one is your favorite? Or do you have a show recommendation that didn’t make Ellen’s list?

People keep sending Ellen the funny police reports from their hometown newspapers. Here are the ones she mentioned on today’s show.

  • Illinois, 10:43 am – An army vehicle worth $74,000 has gone missing after being painted with camouflage.
  • New Mexico, 7:48 pm – A female on High Street called saying a man was sleeping on her sofa and she did not know who he was or how he got into her home. Police found out later that the woman was highly intoxicated, and she had forgotten that the man on the sofa was her brother.
  • Calgary, 7:35 pm – An Oak Hill community couple discovered a thief in their home Saturday after the man told his wife a joke and they heard a laugh upstairs.

Ellen: Dancer of the Day

Ellen shared more behind the scenes video of audience members getting groovy before the show. Two women who didn’t seem to know each other danced competitively to Rick James’s “Super Freak.”
