Ellen: 2012 National Teacher of the Year Rebecca Mieliwocki
When 2012 National Teacher of the Year Rebecca Mielwocki walked onstage, she was doing Ellie Kemper‘s signature dance move, “the panty hose stetcher.” This was a really cool moment because it made her seem laid back and relatable despite that she’s receiving all of this national attention.
Rebecca explained that roughly 3.2 million teachers were entered into the Teacher of the Year competition. Her entry was made my her colleagues. The competition was apparently long and arduous, requiring essays and applications and even a “teach-off.” Rebecca said she kept winning higher and higher level subgroups in the competition until she was finally told she was the winner for the whole nation.
“I didn’t believe it,” Rebecca said.
Ellen: Rebecca Mieliwocki & Barack Obama
After she won the competition, Rebbeca and her family were invited to meet President Obama in the White House. Rebecca said she found the president very attractive.
“He is so crush-worthy,” Rebecca said. “He’s hot. That’s probably not appropriate to say about the president.”
She said he was “so soft, so warm,” and noted his eyes and that he is tall and fit.
“It was awkward because my husband was right there,” she said.
Ellen: Rebecca Mieliwocki Meets President Obama
Rebecca said that she and President Obama had a bonding moment when they started talking about their kids.
“Your son has the handsome gene,” President Obama told Rebecca.
Then they started talking about how awkward it is that their children are nearing dating age. President Obama said it’s not much of a problem yet because his daughter is taller than all of the boys, so they don’t notice each other much yet.
“May that continue for the next 20 years,” Rebecca said to the president.
The president leaned his hand on Rebecca‘s shoulder and said, “For you too, Rebecca.”
Ellen: Teacher of the Year Rebecca Mieliwocki Student Tribute
“We wanted to have you on the show to let you know how much we admire you,” Ellen said. “But who better to let you know than your students?”
Ellen aired a special video of interviews with Rebecca‘s students spliced with footage of her in the classroom. All of her students had wonderful things to say about her.
“She makes learning fun,” one student said.
“Thank you for being a great teacher and always being there for us and not making class boring,” another student said.
Ellen: Rebecca Mieliwocki Tiara & Luggage
As the 2012 National Teacher of the Year, Rebecca Mieliwocki is going to have to do a lot of traveling.
“I get to go to Japan for ten days,” she said. She said she’ll also be visiting China, possibly Singapore, and many different locations in the U.S.
To aid in her travels, Ellen gave Rebecca two pieces of luggage that were glittery with a lot of pictures of Ellen‘s face all over them. Then she gave Rebecca a banner to wear over her shoulder and a tiara to wear where ever she went, so that people would know she was that 2012 National Teacher of the Year.
Then to top it all off, Ellen gave a giant check for $50,000 to Rebecca to use on her school in Burbank, California.
