Ellen: Quvenzhane Wallis Oscar Nomination
Quvenzhane Wallis, the youngest person to ever get an Oscar nomination for Best Actress at nine-years-old, stopped by Ellen January 29 2013 to talk about her performance in the movie.
Quvenzhane Wallis said she didn’t know what an Oscar was until she was nominated. She kept asking people who Oscar was and then they pointed to the golden statue and she was really shocked.
Ellen: Quvenzhane Wallis Casting
Quvenzhane Wallis was cast in the movie when she was only five. There was an open call in Louisiana for actresses six through nine and Quvenzhane was only five, but her mother decided to take her anyway.
She beat out thousands of actresses for the role.
Ellen: Quvenzhane Wallis Being Serious
Ellen asked Quvenzhane how she could be so serious for the role. She said that even though it was so serious when the camera was rolling, it was nothing but laughs and fun when the scene was over.
Ellen: Quvenzhane Wallis Dog Purse
Quvenzhane carries a doggy purse everywhere she goes and she said it was her trademark. Quvenzhane Wallis said she had about 20 different kinds.
Ellen asked Quvenzhane if she was prepared to sit for hours during the Oscars and she said she wasn’t sure. So Ellen got her a big dog purse full of things she could use to keep herself entertained. There was a copy of Ellen’s book, an eye mask that had a picture of open eyes on it so Quvenzhane could sleep if she wanted to and no one would know, a Rubix cube, a bottle of sparkling cider, a camera and an acceptance speech that just read, “Thanks, Ellen.”
