Ellen: Jimmy Kimmel Purple Dress
When Ellen returned from a short break, her birthday co-host, Jimmy Kimmel, was missing.
“I’m missing Jimmy,” she said. “I don’t know what’s happening.”
Then Jimmy walked back onstage wearing a shiny purple dress!
“It took a minute to get my dress on,” he said. “I’m hoping, like you, that if there’s a Bridesmaids sequel, I’ll be in it.”
Bridesmaids: Melissa McCarthy Academy Awards
Jimmy‘s comment about Bridesmaids was made because Melissa McCarthy, who starred in the film, came on the show to visit Ellen and wish her a happy birthday.
Ellen pointed out once Melissa sat down next to Jimmy that she had been announced as “Academy Award nominee Melissa McCarthy.”
“It feels a little nuts,” Melissa said. She said that she had the time of her life filming Bridesmaids and she feels so grateful that it’s been such a successful film.
Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie: Academy Awards
“It was so weird,” she said of her experience at the Academy Awards. “A couple different times, I looked at my husband and said, ‘We’re in it!'”
Melissa said she felt particularly awed to be standing talking to Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. She said it felt like some “weird altered state” because they were beautiful and “so nice and bubbly.”
“Finally I got weird and said, ‘Can we stop? Cause this is a lot to take in,'” Melissa said. “As we’re talking, somebody grabs my hand and says, ‘Melissa! Melissa! Hi. I’m Meryl.”
Meryl Streep must be one of Melissa‘s heros because Melissa said that when Meryl introduced herself, all she could manage to say was, “Oh my god! You’re Meryl Streep!”
She laughed at her tendency to say more or less exactly that to any celebrity she meets.
“It’s a weird pattern I’ve started,” she said. “I did it with Steve Martin.”
Melissa said she doesn’t feel so bad about the awkward tendency because, “People like to know who they are.”
“People lose themselves sometimes in this business,” Ellen poignantly joked.
Ellen: Melissa McCarthy Mike & Molly
Ellen told Melissa that her new show, Mike & Molly is very funny.
“You really are one of the funniest women,” Ellen said.
Jimmy Kimmel, still wearing a dress, seemed indignant that Ellen didn’t include him in her list of funniest women. “I’m right here,” Jimmy joked.
Then Jenny announced that she had a surprise for Ellen‘s 54th birthday. She pulled out a piece of paper and started reading her poem, “Ode to Ellen Lee DeGeneres.”
The poem was hilarious with thoughtful quips like, “When it comes to lady love, you make me think ‘never say never.'”
One line ended with “Your eyes are like the ocean” and the proceeding line read, “If you ever got really bad sunburn, I would cover you in calamine lotion.” When Melissa finished the poem, she gave Ellen a giant hug.
