Kathy Freston: The Lean Book & Diet Plan

Kathy Freston explained that she is “a big fan of leaning into change,” encouraging people to take easy steps toward getting fit. She is not a fan of diets that make you give up all your favorites. They don’t work, she says, because you go back to your old habits.

“This way you’re adding in little steps that are very doable, very practical,” she said, which will cause you to make gradual changes over time.

Ellen: Kathy Freston & Water

Ellen said one of Kathy’s tips is the ages old advice to drink eight glasses of water each day, which is something you have to get in the habit of remembering.

Kathy said that it’s not very difficult to drink water, though we often forget to do so. Drinking water hydrates you and keeps your body working better. She said sometimes the feeling that seems like hunger is actually thirst, and called drinking water pre-loading.

Kathy shared a German study which found that people drinking two cups of water before a meal lost 5 more pounds of fat than those who don’t.

Ellen: Kathy Freston 30 Day Plan

Kathy Freston’s new book, The Lean, offers a 30 day plan for making gradual healthy changes to our diets and routines. Ellen said one of the steps is swapping cow’s milk for a healthier alternative.

Kathy explained that cow’s milk is designed to help calves grow to a huge weight in a short period of time. But the nutrients in cow’s milk can have the same effect on our human bodies, making us overweight and lethargic.

She asked what people would think if humans used their extra breast milk for cooking. “We would not be friends,” Ellen said.

Ellen: Vegan Weight Gain

Ellen is a well known vegan, but she said that you still have to eat healthy choices because you can gain weight on a vegan diet.

She said the classic idea of eating an apple every day can provide fiber and fill you up, keeping you away from the empty calories of other snacks.

Kathy Freston: Apple Health Benefits

“An apple a day not only keeps the doctor away, but it keeps the pounds away too,” Kathy said. An apple contains ¼ of the fiber we need in our bodies every day.

Apples also contain Pectin, a type of fiber used in jam or jelly. Kathy explained that it causes your food to stay in your stomach longer, making you less hungry and equalizing your metabolism of sugar.

Ellen: Kathy Freston Flaxseed

Kathy recommends adding 2 tablespoons of Flaxseed to your diet. She said you can put it in a soup, a smoothie, or anything else you’re cooking. It’s another way to fill up your stomach and eliminate hunger from your daily routine.
