Ellen: Jack Black Bernie Movie
Though he’s best known for his comedic roles in films such as School of Rock and the recent remake of Gulliver’s Travels, Jack Black is showing a little more range in his latest project.
For the new movie Bernie, he got to work with the legendary Shirley MacLaine.
“It was amazing. She is a hero of mine,” he said, “one of the great actors of all time.”
Ellen noted that his title role in Bernie is a different turn for him as an actor, and it’s based on a true story. “It’s about a guy named Bernie Tiede. About 14 years ago, he was involved in a crime, but he was the most loved guy in this small Texas town,” he said.
The man would take care of old ladies’ husbands at their funerals and check up on them afterwards. He was a mild mannered guy who turned out to be a murderer. Jack Black said the subject matter is dark, “but somehow we made it funny too.”
If you think that sounds like an interesting premise (it’s always the neighbor no one suspects!), you can see it play out when Bernie begins rolling out to theaters April 27 2012.
Ellen: Jack Black Meets Real Bernie
The real Bernie is now in prison, and Jack Black went to meet him in preparation for the role.
“I’ve never been to a maximum security prison, and there’s a lot of serious customers in there,” he said. “But luckily, I had some fans…. You want fans at a time like that.”
The prisoners seemed to most enjoy his work in Nacho Libre. He said he tried to mind his manners while in prison, so he wouldn’t run afoul of any of the men he met at the prison.
Ellen: Jack Black Tiger Roll
Ellen wanted Jack Black to show off his new move, the Tiger Roll, so she bribed him with a sack full of Ellen Underwear.
It turns out that the Tiger Roll is just a more acrobatic version of a somersault, so I’m not totally sure what the big deal is. If that’s all you have to do to get free Ellen Underwear, sign me up.
