Ellen: Idina Menzel Interview
Singer and actress Idina Menzel is part of the cast this season on Fox’s musical high school series Glee. Ellen DeGeneres had a lot to discuss with the actress.
Idina Menzel’s Husband Taye Diggs
Idina Menzel has a two and a half year old son with her husband, Taye Diggs. Ellen predicted that he’d be a good singer, since it is in his genes.
Ellen said this was Idina’s first visit to the talk show, but her husband has been on about 10 times. They have been together for 16 years, and got married nine years ago.
They met during the original Broadway run of Rent. She said he has been showing skin throughout his on screen career.
Idina Menzel Glee Kiss
Ellen explained a clip from Taye’s recent appearance, in which she confronted him with a shot of Idina kissing a student in Glee.
“You caught it with open mouth. It wasn’t that salacious,” Idina said.
The ladies point out the double standard, since Taye Diggs has an active romantic life on the ABC drama Private Practice. Among his romantic conquests is Kate Walsh’s character.
Idina said that she’s OK with Taye enjoying himself in his acting roles, and it doesn’t make her jealous.
Ellen: Idina Menzel Madonna Party
Ellen said she and Portia De Rossi skipped Madonna’s recent party, citing the late hour. Idina said she and her husband showed up at midnight, thinking they were already late, only to find out the guests weren’t arriving until 2 a.m.
She said they felt starstruck around all the A-listers, but everyone at the party was very approachable. She said the couple’s gay friend Glenn is obsessed with Madonna, and Taye made a point of dancing with Madonna in Glenn’s honor.
“Don’t get me started on his dancing. He’s an amazing dancer,” she said, pointing to his natural talent.
“I just don’t know why you’re beaming and so happy that your husband is dancing crotch to crotch with Madonna,” Ellen observed.
So far this interview is much more about Taye Diggs than Idina Menzel. Are they going to promote Glee or Idina’s concert album?
Idina Menzel Barefoot at the Symphony
Finally, Idina mentioned that she spent over a year touring the country and performing with symphony orchestras. She partnered with PBS to produce a concert special and album.
“The shoes are off because I was traveling with Walker a lot…and my back was killing me,” she explained, referring to the title. She said she had a great show and felt more comfortable singing barefoot.

George Takei: Noah’s Wish Charity Donation
Earlier in the show, Ellen had recently fired Celebrity Apprentice contestant George Takei sell merchandise to her studio audience.
He joined Ellen on the set to announce that he raised $335 from the audience, with the help of audience member Carrie Sullivan.
Ellen suggested that George sell some more swag after the show. She rounded his pot up to $1,000, planning to donate the proceeds to Noah’s Wish, a charity for displaced animals after tragedies like last week’s tornadoes.
