Ellen: David Arquette Sobriety
David Arquette’s struggles with sobriety have been the stuff of rumors and tabloid gossip. But he’s proud to say that he celebrated one year of sobriety on December 30, 2011.
He said that the process has given him “clarity, just being grounded and sort of being able to not react as quickly to things, or try to hide my feelings or run away.”
David told Ellen that you learn a lot about yourself in dealing with addiction. “I have a better understanding of myself,” he said.

Ellen asked what advice he’d give to others struggling with the challenges of overcoming addiction.
“A lot of people think it’ll change you, like you won’t be your same person,” he said. “But what it does, it opens your eyes to the world.”
David said he’d been numbing himself since a young age, growing up in the streets of LA.
“You start being able to feel again,” he said of kicking his substance abuse habits. He said that going through a 12 step process helped him learn to deal with his emotions.

Ellen observed some of the ways that sobriety has changed David Arquette’s life for the better.
“You’re more present for your daughter,” she said, and praised David’s healthy co-parenting arrangement with Coco’s mother, Cougar Town star Courteney Cox.

David reflected on the current state of that relationship.
“It’s really important to respect the time you’ve had together, to not let resentments control your life and lead you to act out and use finance or children against each other,” he said.
He added that some of your emotional responses could be tied to formative experiences in childhood or development. He said that learning to love yourself opens you up to love the people around you.

David stays healthy and limber by playing basketball and doing yoga. He said he feels like the old guy on the court these days.
