Ellen: David Arquette 8 Months Sober
David Arquette told Ellen that he had been sober for eight and a half months. Ellen commended him and said that it seemed like sobriety was significantly improving his life.“You just look happy and healthy which is the most important thing,” she said.
David said that sobriety has helped him grow in a lot of really positive ways.
“Aside from just drinking, it was really about coming to terms with who I am, asking myself the hard questions, looking back on my past, taking responsibility,” he said.
David said he realized that alcohol was inhibiting his ability to be his “authentic self.” He described a voice in his head that was excessively critical of everything that he did.
“Part of the aspect of recovering from drinking was being able to recognize that voice and not taking it so personally,” he said. Lightening the mood a little bit, David joked, “That goes for all kinds of voices in my head.”
“Whatever it is, it seems to be working for you,” Ellen said.
It was sort of strange, because David seemed slightly awkward and uneasy onstage, as though he were uncomfortable talking about such a personal topic. However, as the interview progressed, it became pretty clear that David’s just a funny and eccentric guy.
Ellen: David Arquette & Courteney Cox Divorce
David said that his drinking really got out of hand after he and Courteney Cox divorced.
“I didn’t want to live anymore,” he said. “I was just so heartbroken and distraught. My family was broken and I didn’t know how to deal with these feelings.”
Despite the divorce, David and Courteney seem to be on good terms. When they publicly separated several years ago, they both said they still loved each other deeply. Furthermore, David has appeared in episodes of Courteney’s show Cougar Town.
