Ellen: Benedict Cumberbatch The Imitation Game
Benedict Cumberbatch came by Ellen to talk about his new movie The Imitation Game, about the incredible Alan Turing, the man who developed the machine that decoded German messages and helped end World War II. Both Ellen and Benedict Cumberbatch said they didn’t know the story of Alan Turing before this. Benedict Cumberbatch said he was shocked that he never heard of Alan Turing.
The story tells how this heroic man, who was a war hero and ended the war two years early, was a gay man who confessed to his orientation in a time of intolerance and was sentenced to either two years of prison or chemical castration. The story is tragic because after all of his good work saving lives and winning the war, he was essentially betrayed by his own people. He was also the father of modern computing science. He basically invented the computer.
Ellen: Benedict Cumberbatch Shirtless
Ellen said that whenever male stars come on the show for the first time, they always show a shirtless picture. So they showed a shirtless picture of Benedict Cumberbatch. After the crowd cheered, Benedict just said, “That was weird.”
Benedict Cumberbatch Trapped by Ellen DeGeneres in a Fairy Costume
Ellen rolled a clip of footage taken from when Ellen was hosting the Oscars. Benedict Cumberbatch was on his way out to stage to present and Ellen was coming in wearing a Gilda the Good Witch costume. It was tight quarters, so Ellen was blocking the way.
“Oh, God, which way do I go? I’m trapped by a massive fairy,” Benedict Cumberbatch said.
“Don’t act like it’s the first time,” Ellen joked.
After the clip, Benedict said Ellen did a great job. It was his first Oscars and people warned him that it could be a long night. But Ellen made it a fun night. He said she also made it a fun experience that was inclusive for everyone.
Ellen: Benedict Cumberbatch Tipsy & Photobomb
Benedict Cumberbatch said he was a little bit tipsy at the Golden Globes, because Ellen’s team gave him some vodka on the red carpet. At the Globes, Meryl Streep was getting her photo taken with a North Korean military official for a skit and when they went to take the photo, Benedict Cumberbatch jumped up into the picture.
Ellen: Benedict Cumberbatch New Baby
Benedict Cumberbatch is having a baby and he doesn’t know whether it’s a boy or a girl yet. Ellen suggested several names she shouldn’t use, which included Englebert, Harpsichord, Glockenspiel, and Carl.
“Carl? Carl Cumberbatch? I’m not getting it,” he said.
“There’s nothing to get,” Ellen joked.
Ellen: Benedict Cumberbatch Impression Game
Because Benedict Cumberbatch is so good at voices, Ellen decided to play a game where he impersonated someone and Ellen had to guess who. So Ellen held up a picture of someone and Benedict did his best impression.
They included Jack Nicholson, Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Bill Clinton, Alan Rickman, and Jar Jar Binks.
For Jar Jar Binks, Benedict Cumberbatch said this in a spot on impression: “Oh, no, it’s a big sea monster. I’m from Star Wars and I say things. I’m the most unpopular character ever. What was George Lucas thinking of?”
His Alan Rickman impression was also spot on and incredibly impressive. He did Alan Rickman as Professor Snape that was absolutely incredible.
As they went to a commercial, they rolled out a baby carriage that was decorated like the Enterprise from Star Trek, presumably Benedict Cumberbatch’s gift.
The Imitation Game is in theaters now.
