Dr. Phil: Planning a Self Change
Dr. Phil said that the strangest part about this whole thing is that, somehow, Leah’s whole family is still intact. Though Leah isn’t getting out of prison until 2015, Dr. Phil says that might as well be tomorrow where planning Leah’s self-change is concerned. Leah needs to start planning for this on an emotional, mental and spiritual level right now if she plans on making this happen. Not only should she be preparing herself, she should be preparing her family, too. They need to understand who they’re getting back when Leah gets out of prison.
Being a Good Role Model
A mother is the most powerful role model in a daughter’s life, and Leah has modeled for her daughter behavior that could be at best described as self destructive. If Leah hopes of being a good role model for her daughter, Leah needs to make her understand that hers is a bad example that should be reacted against, not reenacted. Being a good role model is just as much about avoiding doing bad as it is addressing it when it does happen, and Leah needs to address her past actions to her daughters so they understand the gravity of the situation, its consequences and what it means to take responsibility for them.
Dr. Phil: Learning a Lesson
Dr. Phil told Leah that she needs to spend the rest of her time in prison learning her lesson, and walk out of the prison gates having learned it. She also needs to grow from this.
She also needs to thank Ed for not testifying against her in court. Had he testified, Leah could have ended up in prison for a lot longer than she did, and Ed has effectively given her a second chance to make things right. She can best thank him by thinking about where she is going to be when she gets out of prison, but she can only accomplish this by owning what she did and by taking responsibility for her actions. Then, the healing can begin.
