Hannah is 21, an aspiring teacher and a hard worker. She and Ryan have been together for three years and she is excited to start a family with him. Ryan’s parents don’t think his relationship with Hannah is moral and hope that he will get back together with his ex and the mother of his child.

Gayle thinks that Hannah is the wrong girl for Ryan. She believes that Hannah is the cause of all of their problems and if she would go away their family could come back together. Ryan hasn’t spoken to his mother in three years because of her hatred of Hannah. Gayle thinks that Ryan has a chemical imbalance because he has stayed with Hannah.

Ryan’s father Gary said that if Ryan’s ex was good enough to sleep with, she was good enough to marry. He has met Hannah and her family and doesn’t have a problem with her. His issue is with how Ryan treats his mother.

Dr Phil: Religion In Relationships

Ryan’s mother pulled out the ten commandments and scripture to aid her battle against Hannah. Ryan and his ex were good friends with Hannah and her ex. Gayle pulled the tenth commandment, “Thou shall not covet thy neighbors wife.” She said she has spoken to other godly counselors and they have confirmed that “neighbor” means friend and “wife” can mean girlfriend. Gayle doesn’t understand why Ryan wants his friend’s “leftovers.”

Dr Phil said that you can’t rewrite scripture to support your actions. He thinks that Gayle is rewriting scripture and religion to comfort herself and seem like the higher power in the situation. Gayle insisted she is not judging, only giving counsel to her son.
