Dr. Phil: Birth Control For Cancer?
Dr. Phil has been talking to Jean, whose 17-year-old daughter Cheyenne is dating 28-year-old Josh. Cheyenne said she had Josh take her to get birth control because she heard it prevents cancer.
Dr. Phil questioned this statement. “You’re an honor student, right?” Cheyenne said cancer runs in their family and so she wanted to get it for cancer prevention.
“Check my forehead. Did somebody write stupid on there?” he said.
Dr. Phil contacted an OB-GYN who said that while birth control may reduce the risk of ovarian cancer, birth control is prescribed for contraception and cycle management. Not for preventing cancer.
Dr. Phil: Why Is This Nearly 30-Year-Old Dating A Teen?
After talking with Cheyenne and her mother a little bit, it was time for Dr. Phil to talk to Josh about his past relationship history. Josh said that he and Cheyenne are in love and they have a lot in common. They like hunting, fishing, going to the mall, love tacos, and have the same favorite color.
“Cheyenne is very beautiful, very smart, talented. She’s an honor student and I’m very proud of her. I would buy Cheyenne the world because she means so much to me. She’s a great girl,” Josh said.
In the state where Josh and Cheyenne live, it’s legal for them to date. Josh said that he hates Jeanne, Cheyenne’s mother. Jeanne calls Josh a number of names and Josh says she makes up lies to break them up.
He even said one time Jeanne tried to drive them off the road. He also had to call the police on Jeanne because she blocked him in a parking lot and he thought he was “being held hostage”.
“Jeanne is jealous of what we have,” he said. “Our love is meant to be. I will fight until the end.”
Dr. Phil: Is He Robbing Her Of A Life?
Dr. Phil asked him if he realized from an objective standpoint that it’s odd for someone approaching 30 to be dating an adolescent. He said he didn’t. Josh has a 5-year-old boy and Dr. Phil asked him if he has hopes and expectations for his child. He said he did. Dr. Phil also wondered whether Josh worried about the fact that Josh has experienced a bunch of years Cheyenne hasn’t. He wondered if Josh worried about robbing her of those years.
Dr. Phil said he understood that Cheyenne might not understand the gravity of what he’s saying, but he would expect better of Josh.
“If you really care about her in a mature way, then you would be doing everything you could to enhance her life, right?” he said.
Dr. Phil also asked Josh if he thought it was important for a child to have a good relationship with their parents, which he said he did. He asked him if he thought he was supporting Cheyenne in having a relationship with his mother by calling her crazy and calling her names. Was that mature behavior? Josh agreed it wasn’t.
Dr. Phil: Was He Charged With Drowning His Ex-Wife?
It turns out Josh doesn’t have a happy history. Jeanne claimed that Josh’s ex-girlfriends have told her that he’s abusive and controlling and wouldn’t be a good influence for Cheyenne. One of the ex-girlfriends had a young child and told Jeanne that Josh was being looked into for touching the child. Josh, however, says his ex-girlfriends are liars.
But what could Dr. Phil find out? Josh has to have supervised visits with his child. He got married when he was 21 and his ex-wife was 18. She was 17 when they started dating. She got pregnant a couple months after her 18th birthday.
Josh was accused of attempting to drown his ex-wife. He says he didn’t do it, but he did admit he was charged with it. He was also charged with felony false imprisonment 1st degree, misdemeanor assault 3rd degree, and misdemeanor harassment 3rd degree. He pleaded down and was convicted of misdemeanor assault in the 3rd degree. This put him on probation for three years.
Three of Josh’s ex-girlfriends talked to Dr. Phil. They were all 5 to 7 years younger than him, they all said he cheated on them, and they all said he was abusive.
Cheyenne said she’s not concerned with Josh’s past history. She said she’s been dating Josh for 9 months and “there’s not a bruise or a mark” on her.
