On March 28 2013, Dr Phil talked to two women who were kidnapped at a young age. Katie Beers was taken from her family 20 years ago and held captive in a friend’s dungeon-like bunker for 16 days. Sarah Maynard came home from school and was taken by the man that killed her mother and brother. They have both written books about their experiences in an attempt to help others.

Katie Beers was kidnapped by John Esposito 20 years ago. He constructed a dungeon in his garage to hold her and torture her. He planned to keep her there for the rest of her life, but she was let go because of her survival instincts.

John Esposito was sentenced to 15 years to life for kidnapping Katie Beers. She wrote a book, Buried Memories, about her experience. She said that she hopes he dies in prison. He wrote a letter to her co-author about how he is treated in prison. He said he wants freedom.

Sarah Maynard came home from school and was bound and gagged by Matthew Hoffman. He killed her brother and mother, then held her captive in a room full of leaves for four days. Matthew put the bodies in a tree. Her father and the police finally rescued her. She now lives in fear of being killed.

Sarah and her father Larry wrote a book about what happened, The Girl In the Leaves. She was encouraged by Katie Beers to get back into counseling. The University of Florida made her an honorary Gator for her bravery.
